But here I am—finally ready to share my story, piece by piece.
For years, I struggled with chronic symptoms that no one could seem to explain. I bounced from doctor to doctor, test to test, prescription to prescription. Every result came back “normal,” but nothing about how I felt was normal. I knew something was wrong—but I also knew I couldn’t rely on Western medicine alone to figure it out.
So I started researching. Digging deep. Listening to my body. Trying things that weren’t in any textbook or pharmacy brochure. And slowly, I started feeling… better.

When It All Started
I was around 23 when I first realized something wasn’t quite right.
I remember walking one day and feeling like the ground beneath me was moving—not spinning, not swaying—just… off. Like I was on a treadmill or a floating dock. It was subtle, but impossible to ignore. I mentioned it to someone, and the advice I got was to get my eyes checked.
So I did.
I still remember the optometrist looking at me in disbelief, saying, “You have some of the best eyesight I’ve ever seen.” Great news, right? Except I still felt like the floor was shifting under me.
He told me I should probably see a general practitioner. But I didn’t. I brushed it off. Life was busy, and honestly, I didn’t want to feel like a hypochondriac.
Fast forward about a year, and that’s when things got scary.
I began having these moments where I felt completely drained—like my entire body shut down. I could hear people talking around me, and I wanted to respond, but I couldn’t. It was like being trapped in my own mind, unable to move, unable to speak. Like I’d been taken hostage inside myself.
The episodes never lasted long, but the fear they left behind stuck with me. Something was happening inside me, and I had no words for it.
Then, things started getting weird in other ways. One day, I was hunting for my ketchup bottle—opening and closing the fridge, convinced I had just bought it. I eventually found it… in the back of the cabinet where I keep my drinking glasses.
Little moments like that kept stacking up. Things that didn’t make sense. Things I couldn’t explain. And slowly, those strange episodes started happening more and more frequently.
That’s when I knew I couldn’t ignore it anymore.
I finally made the appointment. I finally said out loud, “Something is wrong.” And that’s where my journey into figuring out my health truly began.
I didn’t know then how long and complicated this road would be. I didn’t know how many times I’d be dismissed or told I was fine when I absolutely wasn’t. But I knew I had to start somewhere.
This was my somewhere.

I finally reached a point where I couldn’t ignore my body anymore. The strange spells, the overwhelming fatigue, the moments where my brain felt like it was misfiring—I was done brushing it off. Done pretending I was okay.
So, I made the appointment.
This time, it wasn’t just any doctor—I had been referred to a neurologist. That felt serious, like maybe we were finally getting somewhere. I showed up hopeful, nervous, and desperate for answers. I told her everything:
The dizziness
The overwhelming fatigue
The "locked-in" spells where I couldn’t move or speak
The brain fog
The bizarre moments, like putting the ketchup in the cabinet and having no memory of it
She listened and said it could be a vitamin B12 deficiency. I told her my primary doctor had already tested my levels and said everything looked fine. But the neurologist believed something may have been missed and ordered a full workup—MRIs of my entire body, bloodwork, and even tests for brain seizures.
After all that, the only outcome was a prescription for B12 injections—no questions about my diet, my ability to absorb nutrients, or anything deeper. Just four weeks of injections… then another two.
I didn’t feel better.
Actually, I felt worse.
The crashes continued. The spells didn’t stop. I got sick constantly—random fevers, migraines, and exhaustion that made it hard to get out of bed. My weight dropped dramatically. I was down to 82 pounds. My face looked sunken in—I looked sick, and I felt it.
Then came a turning point.
I found a primary care doctor who truly listened. She tracked my weight, checked in regularly, and eventually said something that scared me:
"I don’t know what else to do—but you cannot keep losing weight."
I told her I was eating constantly, tracking every calorie. But my body wasn’t responding—it was like it wasn’t absorbing anything. I suggested we check in with a hematologist, and she agreed.
That hematologist gave me knowledge and hope.
She explained that not all B12 issues show up on standard blood tests, and that the amount of B12 your body needs can vary widely between people. Some of us need more frequent or higher doses, and the only way to figure it out is to experiment.
So we did.
With my primary doctor’s support, we adjusted the frequency of the B12 injections—and I started feeling a little better. But I wasn’t well. Not fully.
Then came another clue.
At 28, I began having blood pressure spikes. I was prescribed medication, but nothing stabilized it. By 2021, my blood pressure stayed high—even on two medications. I began experiencing heart palpitations and had an EKG that looked borderline concerning.
I saw a cardiologist, went through all the tests—including a procedure to check for clogged arteries. The results?
Zero percent blockage.
I was perfectly healthy—on paper.
And yet, I continued to struggle. I was eating healthy, exercising, doing everything I was "supposed" to do. But my hair was falling out in chunks. I remember looking in the mirror and feeling sick to my stomach. It wasn’t just the hair—it was the frustration of knowing something was deeply wrong and still not having the full answer.
That’s when I met a doctor who changed everything.
I mentioned a genetic test I’d done in the past that hinted at a possible mutation. She listened and said,
"Let’s test you for the MTHFR mutation."
When the results came in, she called and said:
"We figured it out. You have two mutations on the MTHFR gene."
Here are some facts:
Having two copies of a mutated MTHFR gene means you are homozygous for that mutation. This can lead to a reduction in the activity of the MTHFR enzyme, which is involved in processing the amino acid homocysteine. While not everyone with two mutated copies experiences significant health problems, some may have slightly elevated homocysteine levels, potentially increasing the risk of certain conditions.
Medical Conditions:
Some studies have also linked MTHFR mutations to an increased risk of vascular disease, high blood pressure, blood clots, and certain types of cancer.
She explained it like this:
Most people convert folic acid (the synthetic form of folate found in vitamins and fortified foods) into its active form using an enzyme called MTHFR.
But with this mutation, my ability to do that is severely reduced.
Folic acid can build up in the body unmetabolized, potentially worsening symptoms and contributing to issues like fatigue, mood swings, or clotting.
Instead, my body needed methylated folate (L-methylfolate)—the active, bioavailable form that doesn’t require conversion.
And instead of standard B12 or injections, I should be on Methylcobalamin (Methyl B12)—the active form of B12 that’s easier for my body to use.
She also said that dizziness could be related to poor blood flow or clotting, so I could take a baby aspirin if I ever felt those symptoms coming on—just as a precaution.
This changed everything.
For the first time in years, I finally had a real answer. Not a guess, not a band-aid, but a deeper understanding of what was happening inside my body. This new diagnosis, this insight into the MTHFR mutation, was the beginning of everything finally making sense.
